Does your business need:

  • A head start on environmental compliance or low-carbon initiatives?
  • To collect and process data to improve efficiency?
  • To analyze electrical systems or products to improve performance or reliability?

Our IRAP-supported program offers organizations access to external technical expertise to advance projects focused on energy efficiency, carbon reduction, operational efficiency, and power systems.

EPIC applies applied research and sustainability best practices to assess emissions and energy use, identify opportunities to reduce carbon emissions and system inefficiencies, validate electrification strategies, and support long-term, sustainable growth.

The program is funded by NRC-IRAP and is primarily available to companies within its portfolio across Canada.

Available streams:

Stream 1: Scope 1, 2 & 3 Emissions Baselining

Ideal for: Companies looking to establish a credible starting point for their carbon reduction strategy, including organizations in manufacturing, construction, and agriculture.

We focus on:

  • Quantifying Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions across your operations to establish an accurate baseline.
  • Identifying high-emitting sources and providing tools to track emissions and progress over time.

Stream 2: Product Carbon Footprint

Ideal for: Companies looking to understand the carbon footprint of their products to support sustainability and product-development decisions.

We focus on:

  • Quantifying the carbon footprint of your product across key life-cycle stages, from raw materials through end-of-life.
  • Identifying emissions hotspots across the product life cycle and recommending strategies to reduce emissions.

Stream 3: Automated Data Collection & Analysis

Ideal for: Facilities or processes that require automated data collection to improve reporting, operational efficiency, or product performance.

We focus on:

  • Implementing process data collection systems, including hardware and software interfaces.
  • Implementing utility submetering to support energy-efficiency initiatives and reduce electrical system costs, including global adjustment costs.

Stream 4: Power Systems Analysis & Proof-of-Concept

Ideal for: Companies working with or interacting with electrical power systems that need to collect and analyze data from utility-grade equipment or require advanced, time-based power systems monitoring.

We focus on:

  • Temporarily installing power systems monitoring equipment to identify cleantech opportunities, quantify system performance, and support operational improvements.
  • Providing power systems commissioning support related to protection and control and SCADA systems, particularly for distributed energy resources and generation.

Application Timeline

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

Investment

The program offers approximately 120 hours of work. The expectation is that companies invest 6–8 hours of their time throughout the process.

For IRAP clients, participation in this project is funded by IRAP.

Eligibility Criteria

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) who meet the following criteria will be considered for this service:

  • The firm is an IRAP-client in good standing
  • The firm has a sustainability goal related to EPIC's expertise
